Nutrition for the Mother-to-Be Part 1

You're Pregnant!
What is the first thing the mother-to-be thinks of when she discovers that she is pregnant?  "How wonderful!" or, "oh, no!"  Whatever her first thought, everything comes from that moment on.  One of the first things she should think about is her own physical body and the development of the little person inside.  What is done during those first few weeks will affect the child's entire future.  The way she nourishes herself will determine whether there are birth defects, strengths or weaknesses, the level of the IQ, and a million other things about the health and potential of this new child.  Not only is the child's future affected, so is the parent's  This is why it is so important for the mother-too-be to give urgent attention to her nutrition during this crucial period.  Life becomes so difficult for both child and parent when there are future problems that stem from a bad pregnancy.  So much of this can be prevented by proper nutrition during this time.

What's First?
So where does she begin?  Most women begin with a visit to their doctor.  This visit will start the clinical advice that will end finally with the birth of the child.  But when she steps out of the doctor's office back into the routine, what will she actually do about her health?  She still has to make the decision how she will nourish herself and her unborn child.

Let's think about the right way and the wrong way of nutrition during pregnancy, and see if we can avoid some of the problems.  In this case, an ounce of prevention is worth a TON of cure.  So much has been written in the medical and nutritional journals about this subject.  This blog gives you some of the best of them for a handy reference as you move into this exciting period of your life.

What about Diet?
Eating right was never more important than when you are forming a new little human inside.  Yet, because of nausea, eating can be the hardest thing you do.  Eating right means eating regularly.  You can't be a meal skipper.  You need nourishment three times a day on time to keep up your energy and provide the building blocks for development of the little one.

Eating right means cutting out he WRONG FOOD, such as junk food, high fats, and lots of sugar.  White flour foods such as noodles and white bread are all calories and no nutrition or fiber.  Drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine are "taboo" for the pregnant woman.  Eating the RIGHT FOOD includes whole grain foods such as whole grain bread and cereals.  It also includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, also low fat milk meat, cheese, eggs and lots of pure water.

If you have siliac or trouble with wheat, I like to refer people to Einkorn wheat, which is God's natural wheat before it's been modified for larger farming & heavier crops.  JovialFoods.com
If you're budget is tight, as often it is starting or during your early years as a family.  Consider a food coop, farmers market for locally grown fresh, and BountifulBaskets.org which is a buy online coop.  You purchase on Monday, it's delivered to a drop off station near you on Saturday where you pick it up.  The membership is $3, and a laundry basket of 1/2 fruit and 1/2 vegetables is $15 ($5 added for shipping no matter how much extra you buy, one shipping fee).  They also have additional packages and case lots of fruits and vegetables available, breads, etc. at low prices.

What about supplements?
Even though we know we are supposed to eat right, we often ignore it.  And when we try, the food itself is depleted by chemical growing methods, bright lights, an storage.  Restaurant eating, nausea of pregnancy, skipped meals, traveling, and a thousand other things keep us from properly nourishing that little one, even when we give it our best try.  Food supplements are available to fill the gaps and help us produce a healthy little tyke who will be the joy of our life.

Adding extra protein, or a natural herbal support tea for keeping regular.  Adding super nutrition from
a daily drink powder added to your bottle of water.  It's made very easy for us, from the Zija company and their line of Supermix or Smartmix (has prebiotics), in their Moringa oleifera which is the worlds most nutritious botanical.  This powdered nutritional supplement mixes easy into a smoothie, into juicing, or a bottle of water.  One packet daily.  http://DebbieDennison.myzija.com

Higher IQ's and less birth defects
It has been shown in medical surveys that women who were taking vitamins previous to the time when they got pregnant produced children with higher IQ's than those who were not on supplementation.  Also their children are far less likely to suffer birth defects and allergies.  So don't postpone until after that pregnancy tests shows positive.  Start your supplementation TODAY, regularly, while your trying to get pregnant, BEFORE you're pregnant.

Digestion
With many women, pregnancy and heartburn are synonymous.  Digestive upsets are part of the game.  But it doesn't have to be that way.  Heartburn is often a lack of the right kind of acid in the stomach.  NeoLife's Beta-Gest stops that kind of distress by straightening out the digestion, and making it a pleasure to eat again.  If it is gas and bloating that gives you trouble, try NeoLife's fantastic Enzyme Digestive Complex.  These supplements are of the purest highest quality, human whole food sources, and natural - safe.  These two products can make a big difference in your comfort and the level of your health.  Remember, you have to digest your food before you can build a baby with it.  Heartburn and bloating are a sure sign that something is not working right.  Don't let it continue, for your sake and for the sake of the child.

Minerals are Important
Calcium-- The baby needs to grow its entire skeleton from the minerals in its mother's blood.  If not enough calcium is available, the hormones of pregnancy will see to it that the mother's teeth and bones are dissolved to meet the need of the child.  Calcium is the most important mineral for bone building.  Leg cramps or tooth decay may be your warning that calcium intake is too low.  For me, it was leg cramps.  Medications from my Dr didn't help.  Once I increased my calcium with NeoLife Cal-Meg with Vitamin D, no more leg cramps.

The pregnant woman needs at least 1,500 mg of Calcium each day.  The only reliable food source is dairy foods which supply about 250 mg per glass of milk.  If you are not a milk and cheese eater, your teeth and bones may suffer great damage.  But there is no reason to suffer, for NeoLife provides a calcium supplement called Neo-Cal which is extremely absorbable, making it an excellent choice.  Even better is a chelated form of calcium called Cal-Mag, containing a larger proportion of magnesium.  Either of these calcium supplements will easily fill the needs of your body.  Many competitive calcium products are very UNabsorbable which means less going to the bloodstream, and more to make you constipated.  Use NeoLife's calcium products and you will have victory in this struggle to maintain your own skeleton while supplying all that the baby needs to make him or her develop properly.

Zinc--
Researchers have found that zinc depletion at any time during pregnancy may permanently damage the baby's immune system, and cannot be corrected after birth.  These problems include allergies, susceptibility to infections, and arthritis.  Associated with zinc defiency in the mother and dwarfism in the child, lack of a sexual development, still births, mental retardation, learning disabilities and improper eye development.  After delivery, zinc level remains important because it controls the mother's ability to lactate.  NeoLife has a chelated Zinc that will easily supply this missing mineral.

Manganese -- This is another important mineral during pregnancy.  It is necessary for the nourishment of the child's brain, formation of blood, and much more.  Deficiencies are associated with convulsions, blindness, deafness, failure of muscular coordination, abnormal bone structure, and hyperactivity.

Magnesium-- This mineral is necessary for enzyme activation, bone growth, and muscular contraction.  Deficiencies result in convulsions, kidney damage, etc.

Iron-- Iron is needed to build the baby's blood, especially in the last few months of development.  But remember that the mother's blood volume must expand dramatically as soon as she becomes pregnant.  Without enough iron, the new blood cells will not be able to carry enough oxygen to the developing child, causing stunted growth, reduced intelligence, and even miscarriage.  Many women are acquainted with the tiredness of iron deficiency anemia.

Supplemental Iron must be chelated (coated with protein) to make it absorbable.  Many women NeoLife's chelated Iron is nearly all absorbed.  It dos not upset the stomach or constipate the bowel because it goes to work in the bloodstream where it belongs.
assimilate less than 5% of drugstore type iron.  The rest helps constipate them.

All the minerals are important during pregnancy, and to make them available in a perfect balance within reach of every mother-to-be, NeoLife has put them together in a handy packet called Stress-30.  One convenient packet per day supplies practically everything you need, except Iron.  Order chelated Iron separately to maintain adequate iron levels.
