Nutrition for Age Over 40 yrs Plus

This is not just for senior citizens, but anyone age 40+.  But I'm starting out with a poem about Seniors, sorry.

Senior Citizen's Lament

Thought I'd let my doctor check me
Cause I didn't feel just right.
All those aches and pains annoyed me,

And I couldn't sleep at night.
To the hospital he sent me
Though I didn't feel that bad.
He arranged for them to give me
Every test that could be had.
I was fluoroscoped and cystoscoped,
My aging frame displayed,
Upon an ice cold table
While my gizzards were x-rayed.
Doctors came to check me over,
Probed and pushed and poked around,
And to make sure I was living,
Then they wired me up for sound.
They have finally concluded
(Their results have filled a page)
What I have will someday kill me,
My affliction is old age.

 Funny but True
While this poem is humorous, it points up an important fact.  There are a lot of problems that beset us as we get older that don't necessarily respond to hospitals and doctors.  Many of our physical problems are longer standing, and have a direct connection with nutrition.  They have more to do with how we have taken care of ourselves over the years.  This brings up an important question.  Is it too late to do something about this now?  Does nutrition offer anything at my age to make the next few years better than the last?  Here are some ideas:
So as I type this blog, I'm 57 yrs old, and the mother of 5, grandmother of 10, married 35 wonderful years.  I have a good life.  Yet we've watched our son die of Anthrax Vaccine Leukemia (Army) age 23.  I've had 5 miscarriages, cervical cancer, and 48 surgeries in my lifetime so far.  My husband had thyroid cancer, and now is fighting stage 4 kidney cancer (and so far beating it with Immune Therapy).  I've watched several in my family die of cancers and heart disease.  My own dad has skin and had throat cancer.  My mom had breast cancer (caught very early), and she has COPD, Diabetes, Osteoporosis, high blood pressure & high cholesterol.  Do they take nutritionals?  No, only prescriptions that mask symptoms and don't cure.  They get these free with their medicaid and vitamins cost out of pocket.  I do understand that.  And what about ourselves?  We've been on & off nutritional supplements our whole marriage.  On when financially we were able.  So yes, I do understand when people can't afford to "live healthy".  What can we do?  We do the best we can, with what we have.  Stop eating fast food, going out to eat is expensive alone.  Stop eating pre-packaged processed foods, they are unhealthy and cost more than throwing a recipe together.  Stop eating snacks and pop, alcohol and cigarettes are huge expenses.  When we evaluate our needs from our wants... our goals from our vices... we can afford what we WANT to afford.

Another option, is membership for discounts on average companies do at 25%.  Then if you share with some people, they sign up under you, and you can earn at least what you're hoping to provide monthly for your family.  I've done this most of our marriage, it does help the budget.  In one of the beginning blogs "Why Food Supplements Part 3" March 2016, there is a "Self Evaluation" which helps you understand what your body is telling you it's nutritional deficiencies are. BEFORE you feel the signs of aging, just as before becoming pregnant, is the time to begin nutritional supplements.

Digestion
With advancing years comes a decrease in digestive ability.  Digestion is the place where good health begins.  If we don't get the nutrients into our system, nothing else is going to go right.  But this is the very place where many of us first begin to let down.  The problem lies in our reduced ability to produce stomach acid and enzymes to properly break down our food for digestion.  Without this, the stomach forms all kinds of harmful acids while our food ferments instead of digests.  Fortunately, we don't have to put up with this any longer.  And taking acid medications is not the answer.  NeoLife has developed Beta-Gest to help bolster the stomach's hydrochloric acid, and Enzyme Complex to finish up the digestive process in the small intestine.  With these two products we can accost that steak or salad without those awful after effects.
Elimination
Bowel trouble has greatly increased with the arrival of the food refining industry.  one hundred years ago there was no such thing as white flour, and bowel cancer was hardly known.  Then came white flour -- and with it our terrible epidemic of bowel cancer.  So much fiber has been removed from the average diet that wastes do not move along as they should.  The irritation caused by long contact with the bowel wall provides the necessary irritant to begin the cancer.  If you're concerned about wheat products, or have trouble digesting wheat, or have siliac disease, you may want to look at JovialFoods.com which has Einkorn wheat, which is digestible and most with siliac can eat Einkorn wheat also.  They have assorted pasta's, and rice pasta too.  Order online to find a store near you or have shipped to your door.  NeoLife has a marvelous answer to this problem with Multi-Fiber Blend.  One or two tablespoons per day provides the necessary variety of fiber to keep a bowel healthy and functioning properly.  If you need some extra help there is Neo-Lax, a natural herbal laxative that will get things back on track again.  This used to be a problem for me, in my youth and early adult years.  After I started adding the NeoLife products, everything is back on track and regular.

Cholesterol levels
High cholesterol levels are a constant concern in the health world.  A high level of fat in the blood stream spells trouble.  Plaque building up in the arteries can lead to heart attack.  We are all urged to eat less fat and get more exercise.  This is good common sense.  However, it does not necessarily control cholesterol levels.  With most people it takes more than that.  My cholesterol started to go up, and to get on top of it immediately, my Dr gave me a prescription.  Then my insurance dropped coverage on that very expensive prescription.  The prescription hasn't moved my cholesterol down at all after 6 months.  With most people it takes more than that.  I of course started changing my diet, reducing sugar and fat, exercising daily, even a short time if that's all I could get in.  NeoLife offers Omega 3 Salmon Oil and Lipotropic Adjunct to the rescue also.  The omega-3 factors in salmon oil have a healthy affect on the artery walls and reduce cholesterol levels for many.  Lipotropic Adjunct helps the liver produce more lecithin, which dissolves fats accumulated in the blood stream and the liver.  These two products, plus a reduction in fat intake, can mean a healthier cardiovascular system as we grow older.  I also added NeoLife's Lecithin, as added boost.  After another 6 months on these NeoLife products among others, my cholesterol finally started coming down, just barely into the range now.
Heart  Attack and Stroke
This is the dreaded monster lurking in the shadows to carry away the valiant.  Is there a hero sto slay the dragon and free the captive?  NeoLife is the rescue knight in shining armor again.  Much clinical research and practical application has revealed that Vitamin E, Salmon Oil and PhytoDefense may prevent the conditions from arising that produce a heart attack.  Yes, I'm on all 3 of these.  And my husband, who's heart rate jumped to 184, and another time 225 (side effect of his cancer immune therapy treatments), is also taking NeoLife and especially PhytoDefense to protect his heart.  His heart rate is staying down at normal range now.  As I've started to regain my health, I've dropped 56 lbs.  I stopped dropping weight due to cortizol from extreme stress and lack of sleep over my husband and his cancer.  However, I continue to work at it, exercise and eat right, and take my NeoLife nutritional supplements.  When I would work out, or even working around the house up & down stairs, my heart would start pounding and my heart rate jumped to 165.  Now I can keep my heart rate between 65 and 80 on average.
Two negative factors work together to produce most heart attacks.  First there is the narrowing down of the arteries that feed the heart muscle, due to accumulated fats inside the arteries.  Then there is the tendency of the blood platelets to become sticky and clump together as we get older.  When the artery becomes narrow enough, a sticky nucleus hangs up in the bottleneck.  Other sticky platelets are then caught with it.  The accumulation finally blocks the narrow artery, and the heart dies for lack of food and oxygen.  Vitamin E stops the stickiness of the platelets, and keeps the blood flowing through.  Salmon oil also helps the situation by reducing the accumulated fats in the blood stream.  If people would use Vitamin E and Salmon Oil regularly, most heart attacks and strokes could be prevented.

The introduction of PhytoDefense (the Carotenoid  Complex, Flavonoid Complex and Cruciferous Plus) in an easy to access packet, offers another very effective protection for the health of the cardiovascular system.  These antioxidants prevent free radical oxygen from attacking the LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream and turning it into plaque.

One type of stroke results from weakening of the arteries in the brain allowing blood to leak into the tissue area.  Regular use of Vitamin E helps improve the integrity of the vein and artery walls, reducing the risk of this kind of stroke.

Lecithin and Memory
In addition to helping with high cholesterol... most of us experience a lot of frustration in this area as we get older, but now there is good news in the form of Lecithin.  (Note the poem at the beginning of this blog)
Studies show that Lecithin is rich in phosphatidyl choline which helps form a neurotransmitter in the brain that has to do with improved memory.  In experiments with the elderly in hospitals and retirement homes, Lecithin has been found to improve the memory in a substantial number of cases.  Beginning Lecithin when your memory lapses are "some-hymers" and before it becomes "more-hymers".

Bone density and Calcium
When we were young we could care less about osteoporosis, but in later life it becomes the sign of our old age.  The bent back and sunken jaw are sure signs of bankruptcy in our bone bank.  Remember the blog that during pregnancy, if we're not taking in enough calcium, our body will take from our bones and teeth to provide to our unborn baby's development.  These are the result of inadequate calcium intake or absorption through the years.  Recent clinical research has shown that lost bone density can be improved by taking calcium supplements.  In large study groups, people receiving 1500 mg of calcium per day stopped losing bone density and began rebuilding the strength of their bones.
I had signed up to participate in an osteoporosis study, and at that time, I had strong bones and didn't qualify for the study.  My mom had osteoporosis already.  At age 78, she fell and broke both hips.  That was a long healing process from hospital to rehab nursing home, to being in a walker at home and unable to do most of what she enjoyed before the breaks.  This motivated me, to make sure my bones remained strong.  However, I did have an annoyingly severe problem of restless leg syndrome which medications were not helping any more.  I found out that adding more calcium to my diet, and I have never been fond of milk, would help with the leg spasms and cramps.  I added NeoLife Chelated Cal-Mag with Vitamin D, and no more leg spasms at all.  Finally a restful sleep.

NeoLife's Neo-Cal is an excellent tool for maintaining and restoring bone density.  It is very easily dissolved and absorbed.  Most calcium supplements are not very soluble, and can go right through with very little benefit.  Why flush your calcium & vitamins along with your money down a toilet?  Neo-Cal is up to 70% absorbable, which is remarkable for a non-chelated calcium.  Chelated Cal-Mag is even more effective.  Because of chelation, it has an even higher rate of absorption, plus it contains higher ratio of magnesium.  This is the supplement I'm taking that works for leg spasms too.  NeoLife also has a chewable Calcium, great for children who are lactose intolerant or just don't like drinking their milk.

Prostate Health
What gives the most pleasure in youth sometimes gives the most trouble in later life.  So it goes with the prostate gland.  Prostate cancer is very prevalent among senior men.  One thing that is noticeable about a person who dies from prostate cancer is the lack of zinc found in the prostate gland.  Normally, the prostate gland is the "zinc sink" of the body, containing over half of the entire supply of the system.  Autopsies reveal, however, that zinc is entirely lacking from the prostate of a person who dies from prostate cancer.  It makes good sense to regularly take a good zinc supplement to help keep the prostate healthy.  NeoLife has a quality Chelated Zinc that -- if taken on a regular basis -- will help boost the level of this important mineral, and so possibly prevent a lot of trouble.
Crusiferous Plus (also found individually or in PhytoDefense pkts) offers another very effective protection of the health of the prostate gland.  This antioxidant may prevent free radical oxygen from attacking the prostate gland, causing cancer through its destructive power.

Another "Must" when it comes to prostate health is the Masculine Herbal Formula.  Most older men have problems with an enlarged prostate, called benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH).  This condition is a precursor to prostate cancer.  So anything we can do to reduce BPH is a step in the right direction.  Saw palmetto in the Masculine Formula helps to shrink the swollen prostate and keep its symptoms under control.  So the daily use of the Masculine Formula is a step toward reducing the risk of prostate cancer.

Preserving Beautiful Skin
Healthy Skin begins from Within.  Dry skin and adult acne can result from a lack of Vitamin A.  Wrinkles may accelerate when Calcium,  Vitamin B Complex, Vitamin C and Protein are in short supply.  Protein is needed to replace the constant sloughing off of the outer layer, and Vitamin C with Flavonoids helps build the collagen that keeps skin soft and elastic.  No you can't add collagen to your skin through skincare products, this is misleading marketing.  Look for blogs I've posted about skincare and marketing hype or truth.  I strongly recommend a product line that uses medical grade aloe vera as a base of their products, not water which can't be absorbed by the living layers of skin.  This company was developed through a board certified plastic surgeon to help his burn victims and skin graphs have products to follow up with that "heal skin healthy".

Antioxidants
The cause of aging is the destructive oxidation that goes on constantly in our system -- like a car rusting out by the ocean.  Oxygen is so important to life where it is used properly, but "free radical" oxygen is a form that runs amok and bombards our cells with a destructive force.  If we don't have a protection from free radical oxygen, cells are crippled and we become easy prey to cancer, heart disease and infectious diseases.

The greatest discovery is the role of the carotenoid, flavonoid and cruiferous families in protecting us from this kind of attack.  NeoLife's PhytoDefense (consisting of Carotenoid complex, Flavonoid Complex and Cruciverous Plus) -- along with Vitamin E and Vitamin C -- block the destructive force of free radical oxygen, improve the immune system, and add years to our life.

Brown spots on the skin are a sure sign of aging.  They are probably the result of years of free-radical oxygen attacking the skin.  In one case, in their 70s, didn't have any brown spots as they take more than 500 IU of Vitamin E each day and the PhytoDefense.  These antioxidants help preserve the skin against aging.

What to do?
Regular use of Active Fourty Plus, Super Ease or NouriShake protein,  Vitamin E, Vitamin C, PhytoDefense and for men Masculine Formula will make a big difference in the way you feel and the way you heal.  In addition with other nutritional supplements suggested above as you feel the need.
