First Stage -- DIET
Diet is what we eat; nutrition is what our cells actually receive. Here are ten tips for the kind of diet that will help the cells receive the nutrition they need for health and energy.
#1 Eat whole grain products
Whole grains contain vitamins, minerals, fiber and oils that are essential to our health. Refined foods (white bread and other white flour products) have been stripped of these nutrients in processing. They are high in starch for energy, but low in vitamins and minerals that protect our health. #2 Eat foods high in fiber
This includes whole grains mentioned above -- also fruits, vegetables and meats. Fiber foods make it easier to maintain proper weight because they fill you up with less calories. Fiber also helps protect against constipation, bowel cancer, diabetes and high cholesterol.
#3 Eat much of your diet raw
Cooking, freezing and canning, result in losses of vitamins and minerals. Also, the natural enzyme system in fruits, nuts, grains and vegetables are destroyed by the heat of processing. Raw is better.
#4 Eat a diet adequate in protein
Many people get too little protein for optimum health. We are made of protein and we must have enough each day to maintain our health. As a general rule we need half a gram of protein for each pound of body weight. That means 50-100 grams (2-4 ounces) of perfectly balanced protein each day for the average adult. This is not easy to obtain. Fruits and vegetables are incomplete proteins (they lack certain essential amino acids). Milk, meat and eggs are the best sources because they have them all in the proper balance suited to the body's needs.
#5 Eat goods that are rich in the Carotenoid, Flavonoid and Cruciferous nutrients
Carotenoids are antioxidants found in yellow, orange, red and dark green fruits and vegetables. Flavonoids are antioxidants found in red, blue, and green fruits and vegetables. Cruciferous antioxidants are found in such vegetables as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, radish, turnips and others. All of these fruits and vegetables help prevent heart disease and cancer, and strengthen the immune system. At least six servings per day are needed to protect against these diseases.
#6 Eat three meals per day at regular times
Meal skipping can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) which in turn produces headache, weakness, confusion, asthma, anger and other undesirable results. Whatever our physical problems, they are made worse by low blood sugar.
#7 Drink eight glasses of fluid a day (alcohol is not included)
Dehydration upsets the body's balance and saps energy. A good water filtration system helps restore the purity and good taste of our drinking water with a process that can eliminate bacteria, toxic minerals, farming chemicals and chlorine.
#8 Avoid foods that cause allergies
Know your body and do not eat foods that you can't tolerate. Arthritis sufferers may not be able to handle the nightshade family (tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, etc). People with Crohn's Disease or MS may be sensitive to foods with gluten (bread, cereals, etc). Teenagers with acne may have trouble with chocolate. All kinds of problems (respiratory, digestive, bowel, eczema, headache, etc) can be exacerbated by eating foods that affect us negatively.
#9 Avoid alcohol, tobacco, drug abuse
Alcohol goes hand in hand with brain damage and liver disease. Tobacco and lung cancer are notorious partners. Illegal drugs destroy both mind and body. You can't load up on poisons and expect to make up for it with a healthy diet.
#10 Use food supplements
Chemical farming methods, food processing industry, and our own poor eating habits combine to produce poor nutrition. Poor nutrition makes us vulnerable to chronic fatigue and degenerative diseases.
